Past Simple
Past Simple (Прошедшее простое время)
We use the Past Simple to talk about things which started and finished in the past:
Past Simple употребляем, когда говорим о действиях, которые начались и закончились в прошлом:

With the Past Simple we use time expressions like yesterday, yesterday morning/afternoon/evening, last night/year/week/Saturday, when I was five/ten, ten years ago, in September/2004.
С Past Simple используем слова-маркеры: yesterday (вчера), yesterday morning/afternoon/evening (вчера утром/днём/вечером), last night/year/week/Saturday (прошлой ночью/в прошлом году/на прошлой неделе/в субботу), when I was five/ten (когда мне было пять/десять), ten years ago (десять лет назад), in September/2004 (в сентябре/в 2004 году).

We use the Past Continuous
Past Continuous употребляем:
to describe things which were in progress at or around a fixed time in the past:
чтобы описать действия, которые происходили в определённый или примерный момент в прошлом:
At ten o’clock yesterday I was walking to the station.
Вчера в десять часов я шёл на станцию.
for longer activities interrupted by shorter ones in the past:
для более длительных действий, которые прерывались более короткими действиями в прошлом:
I was jogging in the park when I saw a crowd of people.
Я бегал трусцой в парке, когда увидел толпу людей.
for temporary situations in the past:

We were staying with our cousins.

We use the Past Perfect to talk about what happened before another event in the past. It is used with the Past Simple or Past Continuous.
Past Perfect употребляем, чтобы говорить о том, что произошло до другого события в прошлом. Оно используется вместе с Past Simple или Past Continuous.
The roads were dangerous because it had snowed in the night.
Дороги были опасными, потому что ночью выпал снег.
(It snowed, then the roads became dangerous.)
(Сначала выпал снег, потом дороги стали опасными.)
Everyone was driving slowly because they had seen the accident.
Все ехали медленно, потому что они видели аварию.
(They saw the accident and drove more carefully afterwards.)
