Tatiana’s Day
Every year on 25th January, students, teachers and professors celebrate Tatiana’s Day. This holiday celebrates Saint Tatiana, the patron saint of students. Universities all over Russia celebrate it with various events. In many schools, former students come to talk to the school children about their university studies. The best students receive awards and in some cities, such as Nizhniy Novgorod, citizens choose the best Tatiana from all the students of the city. Some communities have begun using the day to put on plays and performances for families and neighbours in their area. In the evening, people dance in the street or let off fireworks.
Russians believe the patron saint was named after Count Ivan Shuvalov’s mother, Tatiana. On 25th January 1755, Count Ivan and Empress Elizabeth agreed to build the first Russian university in Moscow. Tatiana’s name day also happened to be 25th January, so because of this, the tradition began. For over 250 years this celebration has taken place around Russia.

Ежегодно 25 января студенты, преподаватели и профессора отмечают Татьянин день. Это праздник святой Татьяны, покровительницы студентов. Во всех университетах страны проходят разные мероприятия. Во многих школах выпускники приходят и рассказывают школьникам об учёбе в вузе. Лучшие студенты получают награды, а в некоторых городах, например в Нижнем Новгороде, горожане выбирают самую лучшую Татьяну среди всех студенток города. В некоторых местах этот день стали использовать, чтобы показывать спектакли и концерты для семей и соседей. Вечером люди танцуют на улицах или запускают фейерверки.
Считается, что святая получила своё имя в честь матери графа Ивана Шувалова — Татьяны. 25 января 1755 года граф Иван и императрица Елизавета договорились основать в Москве первый российский университет. Именины Татьяны тоже приходились на 25 января, и поэтому возникла эта традиция. Уже более 250 лет праздник отмечают по всей России.

I like New Year’s Eve, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year. Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.
The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work. We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December. Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top. My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday dinner. All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us tries to dress well.
New Year’s Eve is always connected with our new hopes and dreams. It is a pleasant moment to get presents. I usually get many nice useful things from my parents, relatives and friends. My parents put their presents under the New Year’s tree.
We like to see in the New Year at home with our relatives and friends. They come to us at 10 p.m. We go out to the street to watch firework display and to wish our neighbours «Happy New Year!». Then we sit at the table and cheerily see in New Year. We say, «Best wishes for the New Year!» We don’t go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes. I enjoy this holiday very much. And every time I hope that next year will be better than the last one.
Я люблю Новый год, это мой любимый праздник. 1 января — зимний праздник, а сейчас это первый день нового года. Пётр Первый изменил русский календарь в 1699 году. Он сделал 31 декабря 1699 года последним днём года, а 1 января 1700 года стало Новым годом.
1 января — самая середина зимы. Погода обычно хорошая, и повсюду много снега. Поскольку 1 января праздник, я не хожу в школу, а родители не ходят на работу. Обычно в школе у нас проходит очень интересный новогодний праздник — 28 или 29 декабря. Наша семья готовится к празднику заранее. В конце декабря папа покупает и приносит домой красивую ёлку. В нашей семье есть такая традиция. Я люблю наряжать ёлку игрушками, маленькими разноцветными огоньками, конфетами и красивой звездой на верхушке. Мама и бабушка готовят праздничный ужин. Перед этим замечательным праздником все в семье убирают квартиру, а потом каждый старается красиво одеться.
Новогодняя ночь всегда связана с нашими новыми надеждами и мечтами. Приятно получать подарки. Обычно родители, родные и друзья дарят мне много хороших и нужных вещей. Родители кладут свои подарки под ёлку.
Мы любим встречать Новый год дома с родными и друзьями. Они приходят к нам в 10 вечера. Мы выходим на улицу посмотреть салют и поздравить соседей с Новым годом. Потом садимся за стол и весело встречаем Новый год. Мы говорим: «Всего наилучшего в новом году!» До утра мы не ложимся спать: смотрим телевизор, танцуем, едим вкусную еду и шутим. Мне очень нравится этот праздник. И каждый раз я надеюсь, что следующий год будет лучше прошлого.
