It has been suggested by some people lately that we no longer need libraries as we can just download books from the Internet. I believe that libraries are still necessary and useful for some reasons.
To start with, not everyone can download books from the Internet due to different reasons. We all know that access to the Internet can be a problem for old people and small children. Furthermore, lots of people do not have stable Internet connections and even do not have Internet at all or do not have the skills to use it. However, almost every town and city has a library and there are even mobile libraries that travel to remote villages. What is more, sometimes it is difficult to read books online because of copyright rights and the obligingness of buying a whole book.
In addition, libraries among other things offer books which cannot be downloaded from the Internet. It is not a secret that not all books are available online. For example, it is difficult to find in the Internet rare or old issues of books. Libraries have been collecting books for centuries and the Internet only came along a few decades ago. Many books are still on library shelves, waiting for their turn to be digitised.
On the other hand, some people believe that the Internet offers a wide range of resources for research as well as free downloadable ebooks. I think those who believe in such a viewpoint have probably never experienced the problem of finding and downloading books from the Internet themselves.
All things considered, I believe that libraries are needed as much if not more now than ever before. Although the Internet offers access to a wide range of information, it does not offer the amount of information, resources and services that libraries do. Moreover, a modern library is not only dusty bookshelves and librarians in glasses, it is a huge digital archive with a convenient information search system. As the pace of digitisation of books accelerates, modern libraries will become increasingly necessary. And we will be able to use library services, including via the Internet.
How can you prove that the world is round?
I never said it is, Miss.
