We use the past continuous to describe an action in progress in the past.
Past Continuous употребляем, чтобы описать действие, которое происходило в процессе в прошлом.
It was raining.
It was raining. Шёл дождь.
We form the past continuous with subject + was / were + verb + -ing.
Past Continuous образуется так: подлежащее + was / were + глагол с -ing.
To form negative sentences, we add not to was / were.
Для отрицания добавляем not к was / were.

In questions, the order is: was / were + subject + verb + -ing.
В вопросах порядок такой: was / were + подлежащее + глагол с -ing.
In short answers, we don’t repeat the verb + -ing. Was it snowing?
В кратких ответах глагол с -ing не повторяем. Was it snowing? Шёл ли снег?
Yes, it was.

Past simple and past continuous
Past Simple и Past Continuous
We often use the past continuous and past simple in the same sentence.
Past Continuous и Past Simple часто употребляются в одном предложении.
We use the past simple for short actions.
Past Simple используем для коротких действий.
We use the past continuous for longer actions. The past simple describes an event that interrupts a longer action in the past continuous.
Past Continuous используем для длительных действий. Past Simple описывает событие, которое прерывает длительное действие в Past Continuous.
We use the time connectors when or while to mean that something took place during the time another action was happening.
Союзы when и while означают, что одно событие произошло во время другого.
We usually put when before the past simple clause and while before the past continuous clause.
Обычно when ставим перед придаточным в Past Simple, а while перед придаточным в Past Continuous.
He was playing golf when the lightning struck him.
He was playing golf when the lightning struck him. Он играл в гольф, когда в него ударила молния.
The lightning struck him while he was playing golf.
The lightning struck him while he was playing golf. Молния ударила его, пока он играл в гольф.
